About Founder Joel Gulick

Joel Gulick has been practicing law in the Washington, DC area for more than 20 years. Before he founded BusinessPoint Law, Mr. Gulick spent more than 15 years as senior in-house counsel at large, publicly traded private equity and asset management firms. Mr. Gulick started his legal career by spending five years at Arnold & Porter LLP, an AmLaw Top 50 Law Firm. He has been a trusted advisor to Boards of Directors, C-suite executives and investment professionals at companies ranging from multibillion dollar alternative asset managers to small, founder-owned portfolio companies.

Some of his career highlights include:

  • Mergers & Acquisitions: Mr. Gulick was responsible for all employment law, employee benefits and executive compensation issues during the $5 billion acquisition of American Capital by Ares Capital. He has also executed on numerous aspects of dozens of portfolio company buyouts and exit transactions valued at over $3 billion. 

  • Executive Compensation: Mr. Gulick led the employee benefits and executive compensation function at his previous employer, where he was responsible for structuring, analyzing and negotiating hundreds of employment, severance, retention and change-of-control agreements, equity compensation plan documents and agreements, sale bonus arrangements, qualified and non-qualified deferred compensation plans and consulting agreements both for his employer and its portfolio companies.

  • Employment and Labor Law: Mr. Gulick has counseled boards of directors, senior management, internal client groups and C-suite portfolio company executives on a full range of employment law matters, including issues relating to Title VII, the ADA, the ADEA, the FLSA and analogous state laws, service provider classification, the WARN Act and state mini-WARN Acts, the FMLA and state leave laws, immigration and workers’ compensation.
